Nawaz Sharif - The Cricketer

How many leading politicians do you know who played professional sports?

I guess not may, well…you’re going to know one now. The Prime Minister of Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif did play professional cricket once.

A rare photo of the now Prime Minister of Pakistan swinging his bat in a professional match

His span as a cricket was not long-lasting as he played only a single First Class cricket match on December 10, 1973. It was his first and last attempt at playing professional cricket in Pakistan prior to moving towards the bigger things: Politics. Although not so successful in Cricket, Nawaz Sharif made his impact in Pakistani Politics.

His only attempt to play First Class Cricket was when he played for the Pakistan Railways against Pakistan International Airways (PIA) way back in 1974. However, he wasn't able to open his account and got a duck on his debut. Never played professional cricket again after the duck he had to face in his first ever match. He once played a warm up match against the West Indies, who were the most feared cricket nation at that time. Nawaz came out to bat without even a helmet, quite surprisingly. It took everyone by surprise. And so did he, when he regained the Prime Minister's seat for the record third time in Pakistan's history! (No comments about his political achievements or failures, will leave it for later).
